A Little Background

I feel the need to share some of my background with you to answer any questions you may have in the back of your mind. About a year ago I was finishing up the last few months of my stay in Chico. I was going to college there trying really hard to make something out of it. For the most part it was difficult for me to be there. I was happy to be leaving and ready to take on the next step. But a few months before I left, I was out for a hike and was bitten by a tick. A few weeks later an infection came up that later turned out to be Lyme disease. I began to treat it over the summer and moved up to Arcata to finish school as planned but decided after a semester to be closer to home and focus more on my health situation. So I came back last February and now continue doing what I’ve enjoyed being a part of here.

I was kind of hoping I didn’t need to go into the health situation, but it’s been affecting me a little more lately and it’s better you know what’s going on. So if I’m not in class some days or if I’m not up to par during class occasionally, don’t let it bother you in different ways or sway you. Keep coming in for your own solid reasons and keep your own momentum rolling forward. Come to class because you truly want it, yourself.

As for my current situation and future, I’m staying at home right now, helping out the parents as they help me, and working around town to pay my expenses (not to mention the lessons outside of class, that’s helped!). I’m planning to move on and out at some point, most likely to finish college, when I tackle my situation and when it feels right.

So while I’m here, I’m going to make this class a good one and hope to give people a taste of the depth of Kung Fu, something very dear to me. I wanted to share this with you because I feel it’s good to get a sense of who your instructors are as people, and what they’re after and struggling with in life; to see the good and the not-so-good, and what they represent on the whole. Too many people are after money these days, putting on one face and living another, and giving too little in return. If I can approach this genuinely, then I’ll be satisfied that I’m playing my part well.
