MY GOALS HERE

My aim as a teacher is to first teach genuinely what I know from my heart to yours; to be happy in your successes in Kung Fu, to share in your enjoyment of the art and truly be happy for your improvement and the class’s improvement as a whole. I want you to feel like you’re getting the highest quality San Soo instruction available, and I want to share it with you to the best of my ability. I above all want everyone to feel safe, as though they don’t need to watch out for themselves in here in any regard, and to feel included in the San Soo family; a sense of belonging, mutual trust, and respect.

A lot of this depends on me and how I conduct the class. I see my own shortcomings as a teacher and in openness and hope that if you do too you’ll let them go and learn from them. I’m here to learn too, and there’s a lifetime of work to be done. Please share with me any concerns or issues that come up. I am thankful for Robert’s support in doing this class. If it wasn’t for him none of these extra classes would be possible.

My hope right now is that the class continues to grow in enjoyment of the art, while keeping to a rigorous standard of technique at the same time. I appreciate each and every one of you for being here. You all bring good qualities to the class and help each of us grow just by being here. I might learn the most out of your being here. I get to figure out how to make Kung Fu accessible to you, how to encourage your unique talents and growth, and help you feel included. I think about this a lot.

You’ll eventually run into some aggravating difficulties in your training. There will be no shortage of those. We’re here to help, no matter what it is. And if you run into difficulties in life, Kung Fu can help you work through those too and aid in weathering the storms. I heard a master say once that Kung Fu was more valuable to him than years of therapy ever was. I would definitely agree that good training with the right attitude helps normalize the emotions and gets you back on your feet. It changes people’s lives.

So thanks for being here. I certainly appreciate it and hope you continue to train and grow, inside and outside of class. Remember it’s good to work through the difficulties. Feel free to address them as they come up. All of us upper belts are here to help.
You’re always welcome in my company, wherever I happen to be.
